Species (1995)
Not anything special, but not so bad either. It’s clearly a B movie, with OK special effects, OK and only slightly stretched storyline, typically bad dialogue and underdeveloped characters, and lots of female nudity. Natasha Henstridge’s breasts were pretty much the main character of the movie. Tired of simply showing the plain old boobs, the director (screenplay writer? special effects supervisor?) invented “boobtacles”, the boob tentacles, which the alien used to choke its victims. I have to admit that this trick turned out to be pretty funny.
In my opinion, one of the main problems with the majority of exploitation sci-fi movies is not the presence of female nudity, but complete absence of male nudity. It just doesn’t seem fair... The idea that only straight teenage male nerds like sci-fi is ridiculous, but that seems to be the general misconception. I think all B movie directors should learn from “Alien.” The movie doesn’t need a bad-ass male protagonist to be appealing to males. And if the movie actually does feature an ass-kicking female protagonist, she doesn’t need to have oversized secondary sexual characteristics to be worshipped by millions of sci-fi fans (both male and female).
Conclusion: Either show less boobs – it’s distracting and unnecessary, or show more penises, that would at least make it less sexist.
